Tropical Storm Elsa – Update #3 – 7/3/2021
University of Florida officials are actively monitoring Tropical Storm Elsa, and much remains unknown about the storm’s path. Here’s what we know today:
A hurricane warning remains in effect for portions of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Heavy rain will impact the Cayman Islands and Cuba tomorrow into Monday. Tropical storm conditions and dangerous storm surge are expected with hurricane conditions in portions of eastern Cuba beginning early Sunday.
No tropical storm warnings or watches are currently in place for the state of Florida but will most likely be issued later today. The current forecast indicates tropical storm winds will most likely reach the Keys during the day on Monday and then spread into the Peninsula Monday night into Tuesday. UF units in Florida should monitor forecasts and be prepared to follow guidance and implement plans.
There is an increasing risk of tropical storm conditions, storm surge and rainfall impacts beginning Monday in the Florida Keys and the southern Florida Peninsula. This risk will spread northward along the Florida Peninsula through Wednesday.
No tropical storm warnings or watches are currently in place for Alachua County, and no operational changes are planned for the UF campus in Gainesville. Gainesville is projected to receive 3.2 inches of rain over the next five days. We will continue to monitor and update the UF community on expected impacts or schedule changes as information becomes available.
